In addition to ordinary catnip, products also exist made from catnip spray and catnip oil, for use on catnip cat toys or any items not designed to have a catnip component.

What Is Catnip Spray?

Catnip spray is very simple at its essence. Catnip spray in most cases is plain old catnip oil and water in a spray bottle that you can use for getting catnip into / onto items that have no internal catnip component. Catnip spray should never be sprayed on cats themselves or in their food, as the catnip oil might affect their diets, and catnip spray on their skin would cause obvious problems. A bottle of catnip spray will typically come in 1, 4/5, or 8 oz spray (not aerosol!) bottles. Since catnip is typically quite potent, you don’t end up needing to use an awful lot of catnip spray to accomplish your goals.

But What Is Catnip Oil?

Catnip oil, otherwise known as neptalactone, is the essential oil from the catnip plant that gives catnip its distinctive odor. Catnip oil is sensitive to UV light, so keep in a cool, dark place for maximum freshness and effect. Iowa State University studies found that catnip oil is 10 times more able to repel mosquitoes than DEET. Another interesting ability of catnip oil is that it can serve as a termite repellent as well, though unfortunately catnip oil breaks down in the environment quickly, so catnip oil based termite repellent still needs further study.

Catnip Spray and Catnip Oil Uses

If you have old catnip cat toys or cat scratching posts, you can use catnip spray to revitalize them for your cat’s renewed enjoyment. You can use catnip spray or catnip oil on items that have never before been treated with catnip? Have a cat condo kitty doesn’t have much interest in? Give it a shot of catnip spray or catnip oil and see how they like it then. If Fluffy scratching the furniture? How about some catnip spray or catnip oil on a cat scratching post? They’ll be attracted to the scent, the catnip reaction, and be encouraged to do something practical and useful at the same time.

Catnip Spray and Catnip Oil Summation

As demonstration, catnip spray made from catnip oil can be a great tool in revitalizing old catnip cat toys or cat scratching posts, in addition to less obvious uses. I hope you’ve been helped by reading about catnip spray and catnip oil here at All Things Catnip!
